Today we are 7.6 billion individuals on the planet. In 30 years’ time we will be 10 billion. The ocean will be the principle resource of life on earth. Through their choices, actions and voyages, the men and women united in La Belle Classe Explorer by the Yacht Club de Monaco are innovating and raising awareness of the ocean’s importance for humanity, and the absolute necessity to preserve it and ensure its biodiversity flourishes.
Exploration
In the wake of Prince Albert I
The aim of the Yacht Club de Monaco’s La Belle Classe Explorer is to perpetuate the spirit of Prince Albert I’s expeditions. He was an early pioneer of oceanography when he made his first voyage in 1885 on L’Hirondelle, a 200-ton sailing ship bought and fitted out in 1873 with a view to discovering the ocean and innovating in many fields, including development of new scientific equipment. As Prince of Monaco his goal was to testify to the ocean’s infinite beauty and usefulness to humanity, hence the vital necessity to protect and preserve its biodiversity for the benefit of future generations. For many years, HSH the current Sovereign, Prince Albert II, has been ensuring this spirit of exploration and ocean preservation continues to develop, as did Captain Jacques-Yves Cousteau who in 1950 converted his vessel Calypso for oceanography.
